Stale Amsterdam

STALE differs from most portrait painters in its own artistic way of working. Where traditionally trained artists often use a brush, STALE literally throws the paint onto the canvas. STALE’s extensive portraits sometimes consist of more than 40 layers and use liters of acrylic paint. It is a complicated process and requires an intensive, sophisticated way of working because there is no room for corrections.

REMBRANDT BY STALE AMSTERDAM

From almost 9,000 submissions from 95 countries, the STALE AMSTERDAM canvas was selected by the Rijksmuseum as one of the winners of its “Long Live Rembrandt” competition as part of the Rembrandt year. Exactly on July 15, 2019, exactly 350 years ago, Rembrandt was born. During a special summer exhibition “Long Live Rembrandt”, STALE’s canvas will be exhibited in the Philips wing of the Rijksmuseum from July 15 to September 15, 2019.

For the portrait of Rembrandt, from 1661 onwards STALE opted for “Self-portrait like the Apostle Paul”. Like Rembrandt, STALE tried to play with light and contrast. The applied layers contain colors that Rembrandt himself used, such as roasted umber, brown and red ocher, roasted sienna and titanium white. The painting consists of 37 layers. The colors are applied layer by layer. Seven liters of acrylic paint were used for this. The size of the canvas is 160 x 160 cm.

In recent years, STALE AMSTERDAM has exhibited in the Netherlands in the courtyard of the Hermitage, on the Museumplein during the Van Gogh year, in the Amsterdam ArenA during the ADE and in the Vlaams Cultuurhuis / de Brakke Grond.

STALE has exhibited internationally at Art Expo in New York, Spectrum / Art Basel in Miami, Art Shopping Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, Dubai and Berlin.
