Jacob Gils
Jacob Gils was born in Gentofte, Denmark, in an artist family. His mother is the painter Merete Hansen and his father was the painter Ove Gils. Jacob Gils graduated from the Copenhagen School of Photography in 1989, where he assisted the Danish photographer Leif Schiller. In his early career he worked as an advertising photographer and founded the renowned photo studio Gils Photography. In 2001 he switched to an art practice and began to experiment with various techniques and forms of expression in photography.
Jacob’s Statement
Desiring to break away from controlled predefined photography, I used a certain technique by transferring Polaroids onto watercolor paper and deliberately dividing the photo into several fields. The new version of photography reveals the unique expression of the Limit To Your Love series. I recently developed this series for further research using old-fashioned glass plate techniques.
Movement is a series that combines a strong aesthetic perspective with meticulous attention to technical detail.
As the title suggests, the series is about giving shape to temporal and spatial aspects that are inherent in every visual experience.
Transfer series are Polaroids that are transferred to watercolor paper.
This technique creates a particularly atmospheric and dreamy mood. On closer inspection, however, the eye begins to decipher that real works are represented in these works, all with their special properties.
